Welcome

Thank you for your visit, I hope you have time to linger a while. If not, please return soon.

The internet is a relatively recent addition to the media available to us for creative expression. The difference, compared to more traditional means,  is the potential to almost instantly reach millions of other web users. No publisher's rejections, no need to convince a gallery owner, no need to sell a script to a TV producer ... just sit at home, type and upload to your website. Of course the likelihood of millions of website hits is relatively low but that really isn't the point, is it? The point is for each of us to exercise our mostly atrophied creative muscles and actually produce something - whether hosts of others will look at it or not.

Some like to paint, others like to act or sing and I like to write. Well, to be more accurate, I like to think, to ponder, to muse (hence the somewhat naff domain name: davidsmuse.co.uk - too late, it's done now). My thoughts used to get an occasional airing during the late night drinking sessions that, sadly, now seem to have gone the way of my youthful looks. Even in those days - while I'm certain that I expressed myself impeccably after the 4th. bottle of house red - I knew that the only way to really articulate my thoughts properly would be to write them down. I have put this off for too long and now, putting all fears of failure aside, the time has come.

By the way, "Animus Meus" is (I hope) Latin for "what make me tick", or "my soul", or "my spirit" or "my mind" or even "what I am". The Om or Aum symbol incorporated into my banner title represents what the Hindus call Brahman and this concept is the central tenet of my personal philosophy. This Wikipedia entry describes it nicely:

"Brahman is the unchanging, infinite, immanent, and transcendent reality which is the Divine Ground of all matter, energy, time, space, being, and everything beyond in this Universe."

And, in case you are curious, the pictures on the left of this page are all of myself, aged (approximately): 2, 5, 12, 18, 25, 36, 48 and 56.

Philosophy

So, this section of the site contains the above mentioned expression of my musing and let it be said right now that I'm somewhat daunted by the task at hand. It is all very well taking subjects like religion, war or crime & punishment and explaining my views on each in isolation. But it is a very different matter to try to weave those individual subjects into a continuous fabric: a cohesive whole. I am no Plato or Descartes nor do I have any academic background whatsoever, beyond the English secondary modern school system of the 1960's. But the thing I realised in all those late night discussions was that I could not do justice to my views on a topic without filling in the background philosophy behind those beliefs. To do that in a short debate is practically impossible so I would always end up saying "One day, I'll write all of this down so that you can see where I'm coming from". And here we are.

Other pages

The rest of the site is an exercise in sharing:

  • Photo Albums for general viewing. In these albums, anyone interested can have a browse. I used to have a family-only page but sites like FaceBook and MySpace are probably better for that kind of personal interest stuff.

  • Smiles and Grumps: at the moment, just a list of likes and dislikes. One day I might add a few lengthy rants and raves.

Thank you for your interest.
